Information about cookies and how we use the information to improve our website.

What are cookies?

Cookies are small text files that are placed on your device by websites that you visit.

Why we use cookies?

We use cookies to help us improve the performance of our sites.

The cookies are used to collect information to analyse which parts of the website are most useful to our visitors. The information is used only for web analytics and no personal details are stored as all data in Google Analytics is aggregated and anonymised.

What information we collect?

The information we collect includes:

  • the name of your internet service provider and the internet protocol (IP) address you are using
  • the date and time you visit our website
  • how you use our website and the pages you interact with
  • the internet address of any websites which have linked you directly to our site

What cookies we set up?

Google Analytics including Google Analytics Advertising Features

Registers a unique ID that is used to generate statistical data on how the visitor uses the website. The cookies will not be used for advertising but instead provide us with more information about who visits our site and what they look at, in order to provide us with information and make improvements to the website. The information collected by these cookies cannot identify individuals. Within Advertising Features we have implemented Demographics and Interests reports.

Library system

When a user logs in we put the user id/barcode in the logs showing that the user had logged in, this uses a session ID cookie. If you delete the cookie, the login/session information is lost and you would need to log in again.

Other actions taken by the user (searching/placing holds/renewals/my lists) gets logged too, but not in a way that would let us link the action to the user who is logged in. We can say when a hold is placed, but not by who or on what (aside from looking up the hold in the Symphony database). Searching similarly logs what search was done and how many hits were returned, but not who did it.

We also use cookies to track page views and actions in Google Analytics by IP address to get a better sense of how the product is used.
